The Classic Motifs

The dragon carries strength and protection; the phoenix, renewal. Guanyin, the goddess of mercy, watches over the wearer through hardship — a traditional gift for men, as Buddha is for women. The gourd (葫蘆) sounds like blessing and fortune; the lotus rises clean from the mud; fish bring abundance year after year; the pixiu guards wealth.

Reading a Carving

Look at how the carving answers the stone. A fine carver places the best colour where the motif needs its life — the green in the dragon’s body, the warm patch in the lotus heart. Crisp, unhurried lines are the signature of patience; jade cannot be carved fast.
