The old saying promises that jade cares for its keeper — but the keeping goes both ways. Jadeite is a remarkably tough stone that has outlasted dynasties, and with a little attention your piece will grow more beautiful with the years, not less. Here is everything it asks of you.
Wear It Often
Jade is not meant to sleep in a drawer. Worn against the skin, it takes on a gentle warmth and, over years, a deeper lustre — this is the truth inside 人養玉,玉養人. The natural oils of your skin are the kindest polish it will ever receive. Wear it, and it will reward you.
Cleaning
A soft cloth, dampened with clean water, is all your jade needs — wipe gently and dry thoroughly. For pieces worn daily, a little mild soap in lukewarm water now and then is fine; rinse well and pat dry. That is the whole ritual. Jade does not ask for much.
What to Avoid
- Hard knocks. Jadeite is tough, but a sharp strike against tile or stone can chip or crack any gem. Remove bangles and rings before heavy housework, sport, or gardening.
- Chemicals. Perfume, hairspray, cosmetics, bleach and cleaning agents can dull the surface over time. Let your jade be the last thing you put on and the first thing you take off.
- Ultrasonic and steam cleaners. Never necessary for jade, and best avoided entirely.
- Prolonged intense heat. Do not leave jade on a sunny dashboard or near a stove for long periods; sudden extremes of temperature are unkind to any natural stone.
Storing
When your jade rests, let it rest alone — in a soft pouch or a lined compartment, away from diamonds and other harder gems that could scratch it. For necklaces and beaded pieces, check the cord and knots from time to time; silk and thread age faster than stone.
